15 Things to Do in the Maldives

Things to Do in the Maldives

Maldives is an Islamic state and their government requires all citizens to be Muslims. It is written in their constitution that in order to be citizen, one must convert to Islam. But non-Muslim travelers are very much welcome to explore this ultra-small country. In fact, it is the 8th smallest country in the whole world. So, you ask – what is worth seeing in Maldives? Well, to answer your query, here is a complete Maldives travel guide for the beach lover like you.

15. Theemuge

One of the things to do in Maldives is to visit Theemuge. The landmark, Theemuge in Maldives, is not similar to the term House of Theemuge. Theemuge as a landmark or tourist attraction refers to the previous presidential palace of the country. It was used as the president’s “home” until 2008 when the elected president felt that it was too highly to stay there.
The House of Theemuge refers to a dynasty back in the 12th century and it is in no way connected with the tourist attraction called Theemuge.

14. Sultan Park

The 16th century Sultan Park is an important and historic place in Maldives. It is what remains of the Sultanate era and at this time; the Maldives government has exhausted all efforts to maintain this scenic attraction. Most tour packages include the Sultan Park in their itinerary and travelers are brought to the ruins of the Royal Palace and the Old National Museum. It is the only well-maintained flora and fauna section in the country which locals and tourists love to spend time in.

13. Utheemu Ganduvaru

Utheemu Ganduvaru is the residence of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu back in the 16th century. Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu is a national hero and leader of Maldives until his death in 1585. He relentlessly fought Portuguese invaders who wanted to capture the country. If you want to see 16th century homes in Maldives – how the “elite” people back then lived like – just go to Utheemu Ganduvaru. This is where the Sultan was born and raised by his parents.

12. Medhu Ziyaaraiy

Being the person who introduced Islam to the people of Maldives and helped them convert back to the belief, Abdul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary was “immortalized” by his Islam brothers through the Medhu Ziyaaraiy Mausoleum. A story about Abdul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary back in the 12th century was a bit folklore-like but it was passed on from one generation to the next. Adbul recited the Qur’an to ward off an evil sea monster from killing a virgin girl in Maldives. Because of this, the King reverted back to Islam and compelled everyone in the country to do the same. One of the things to do in Maldives is to visit this place.

11. Mulee-aage Palace

The Mulee-aage Palace is the official home of the President of Maldives since 2009. It was built in the early 20th century (1914) and was completed after five years. President Mohamed Nasheed found it fitting to live there because the Theemuge was too highly for him. It is located in Male and to be honest, it is a very modest place for a President of a country to be living in. It just shows that President Nasheed and the president after him are grounded people who are in a true sense, a public servant.

10. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant

One of the famous attractions in Maldives is the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant. It is literally underwater and you can see a family of stingrays swimming above you. The experience of travelers going here is unique and the word coming out of their mouths is – AMAZING.
The word Ithaa means Mother of Pearl and the restaurant is 16 feet below sea level. Only 14 guests can occupy the restaurant at one time and if you are in your honeymoon, this is the best place to go and eat sumptuous meals.

9. Kuruhinna Tharaagandu

Kuruhinna Tharaagandu is an archaeological site which was discovered in 1996 at Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, Maldives. It was the location of a Buddhist temple back in the 7th century before Islam was spread in the country. The whole edifice was made in coral stone and sixty four structures were excavated in two years. Soon after exposure, the coral stones started to erode and wither. Since 2008, the site has received preservation efforts from the US under the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation group.

8. Hithadhoo

Hithadhoo is the second biggest island in Maldives with 11,129 residents according to a 2014 census. The place is famous for its beaches and many tourists stay here for a night or two. One of the things to do in Maldives is to explore Hithadhoo on foot since it’s not too big. The whole island is only 6 kilometers long. The island is filled with wetlands and it is filled with green shrubs and Palm trees. The Equatorial Convention Centre is situated there.

7. Meedhoo

The most ancient place in Maldives and the most populated at that is the Meedhoo. It is also called the Midu and is located at the Addu Atoll Island. In Sanskrit language, Meedhoo means Big Island and it is believed that people have started living there since 1000 BC. The whole area is 2.3 kilometers long and 1.6 kilometers wide. Not many people live here as there are only 2,806 residents as of the 2013 census. Still, visitors from other countries pass by Meedhoo just to experience the place.

6. Hanifaru Bay

There are no people living near the Hanifaru Bay but it is a tourist spot in Maldives because of its rich waters. Vacationers go there to swim and dive along with manta rays and get this, there are whale sharks too! Of course you can’t observe these sharks in close proximity but you can see them from above. If you are planning to visit Hanifaru Bay to see these lovely sea creatures, the best time to go there is between the months of May to November since manta rays fill up the bay during that period.

5. Villingili

Villingili is a resort located in Seenu Atoll. Actually, it is the one and only resort in the area which was built by Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts. This project was through the efforts of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as he made a deal with the company to create a posh beach resort. It was partly subsidized by the government.
Today, there are 132 villas in the area and one of the things to do in Maldives is to go there and relax, basically. It has a golf course (the only golf course in the whole country) and also nearby is Mount Villingili, the only summit in the country.

4. Hulhule Island

All foreigners are to pass by Hulhulé Island in Maldives because the international airport is located there. Some stay here for the duration of their vacation and check in at the Hulhule Island Hotel. It’s not really a resort hotel and is more like a backpackers lodge but it is the only hotel in the island so it will have to do. Other vacationers do some island hopping so as to see the other islands in the country starting with Hulhule. Good thing the beach there is heavenly and most of the time, peaceful.

3. National Museum of Maldives

Prime Minister Mohamed Amin Didi inaugurated the sole national museum in the country back in 1952. It was opened on Maldives National Day which was in the 11th of November.
The main purpose of the Prime Minister back then as to why he initiated the museum is for preservation of history and teaching the Maldives people of what the country is and how they came about all those centuries ago. They have relics from the Buddhist and pre-Islamic era up to the recent times. The building is located at Sultan Park, another one of Maldives tourist attractions.

2. Coral Stone Mosques of Maldives

The Coral Stone Mosques of Maldives is part of UNESCO’s tentative list which was submitted by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. It is a compilation of mosques in Maldives – the Ihavandhoo, Meedhoo, the Male, the Fenfushi, the Male Eid, and Isdhoo Old Mosques. The first four mosques mentioned are all Friday mosques. These mosques were submitted to UNESCO for review because of its historical significance and sea-culture architectural design. One of the things to do in Maldives is to visit these 12th century structures. It will be worth your time.

1. Hulhumale

The most visited place in Maldives is Hulhumale. It’s not a natural island. Hulhumale is an artificial one and it was created to extend the land area of the country. Most of the country’s resident live here and that’s about 30,000 people. It has an area of 2 square kilometers with various building developments. It has the Mosque of Hulhumale which can accommodate 1,500 worshippers. The area is filled with housing units and construction is ongoing to this day.

The difference between tourism and exploration when Paulo Coelho

Known novelist Paulo Coelho talks about the difference between tourism and exploration. They see what it reveals them positional lights only. When they return to their homes they say they know Paris. Tomorrow, they go to see the Mona Lisa, claiming they visited the Louvre. But they knew not Paris, but the fact that they went to the Louvre. All they did is a sailing boat and look at a single panel, rather than to look at the entire city and try to discover what is happening in and visit the bars and go down to the streets that do not appear in any of the tourist guides, Aimoa in order to find themselves again. This is the difference between a watch a pornographic movie and making love

Pros Travel and Tourism

Work experience

It is relatively easy to find paid part-time work opportunities in the travel and tourism industry, since it is so large and there are so many types of visitor establishments and attractions all over the UK. The range of different working patterns available should make it easy to combine part-time work with your current study.
Voluntary work may also be a good option, especially if it means gaining experience in an area where job opportunities more scarce.
You could also consider summer work experience or spending time working abroad. This could include working at holiday or theme parks, in a resort or at summer camps abroad. You could also purchase a student railcard and travel through Europe, widening your cultural knowledge and language abilities.
You may be able to take part in an exchange programme, spending some time studying abroad towards your degree. Consider looking at relevant short courses, such as TESOL or TEFL, which may present opportunities to work abroad teaching English language skills.

Typical employers

The travel and tourism sector comprises many different industries and sub-industries, including services such as retail travel, currency exchange, tour operators and tourist boards. It also covers passenger transport including coach, aviation, rail and waterways and visitor attractions such as museums, theme parks, zoos and heritage sites.
A variety of accommodation services also fall within this category, including hotels, hostels and holiday parks. Associated with hotels and core business operations are conferences and events, which provide considerable all-year-round employment opportunities.

Further study

Specific in-house training is likely to be available within the industry and is often encouraged to enhance promotion prospects and knowledge of particular issues.
Relevant postgraduate study in this field includes courses with an emphasis on management skills, particularly in areas such as hospitality, heritage and sustainability. Postgraduate courses in specialist areas such as ecotourism or rural development may also be helpful.
General business topics such as marketing or human resources could be relevant and can be applied across various disciplines.

Travel and Tourism

Tourism is a significant component of the New Zealand economy contributing to job creation and export revenues. It also has a major role in rejuvenating and sustaining regional economies. According to Tourism New Zealand the two main reasons tourists' travel to New Zealand is to experience our beautiful landscape and distinct Maori culture.
Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler says December has topped off a significant year.“This is a really exciting time for the industry with positive signals everywhere.

Here at Otago Polytechnic we take the business aspects of tourism seriously and ensure our graduates have excellent knowledge of all facets of tourism. We also provide our students with the opportunity to experience some of these activities in our fieldtrips and as part of their course and work in industry.
Welcome to the "business of tourism". This is a one year (120) course which follows on from the Certificate in Applied Travel and Tourism. This programme incorporates not only the practical aspects of working in the tourism industry from a business perspective, it also applies the theoretical concepts behind them. 90 of the 120 credits required must be gained from the following courses (45 credits must be at Level 5) and the last 30 credits come from the work based research project - a compulsory part of the programme which must be completed before graduation.

Residents Eye Legal Action Against FAA Over New Flight Path from Sea

Organizers in the Seattle suburb of Burien are prepared to take legal action against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over a recent flight path adjustment.
KOMO News reported residents of Burien and nearby Seahurst are growing increasingly frustrated with the FAA's decision to allow Q400 turboprop aircraft taking off from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to fly directly overhead.
The flights, primarily operated by Alaska Airlines, have been allowed to make an immediate left turn on northerly departures since July 2016 with the goal being to speed up departures at Sea-Tac.
Dr. Dennis Hansen told KOMO the planes sound like "a fleet of greyhound buses" and said they can be heard every 15 minutes. But according to the FAA, the flights in question only account for 2 percent of the annual departures from Sea-Tac.
While the FAA has made itself available to the neighborhood group organized to combat the issue, neighborhood leaders say it hasn't done enough.

"They have been very vague and not forthcoming with answers," Quiet Skies Coalition president Larry Cripe told KOMO News. "Currently we are underway to take legal action to stop what's been done."
The group intends to file a lawsuit against the FAA and the Port of Seattle, which operates Sea-Tac Airport.
In a statement to KOMO, the FAA indicated that it's "aware of concerns by the City of Burien with a very limited, but increasing number of smaller turboprop aircraft over a portion of Burien" and said it plans to work to "identify other possible ways to mitigate this issue during the limited time they happen."
According to KOMO News, the Burien City Council is weighing the possibility of authorizing as much as $100,000 to battle the FAA in court.

Trips to Cuba

Depending on how you look at it, cruising to Cuba is either expanding or becoming more limited than initially expected, all while future relations between the U.S. and the island nation are up in the air regarding president-elect Donald Trump’s stance.
As far as sailing to Cuba roundtrip from the U.S. is concerned, Fathom remains the only regular option, that is at least until in May 2017 when its license to cruise there expires and its only ship, the Adonia, is soon expected to transfer out of the fleet. At least six of the line’s Dominican Republic voyages, offered on weeks in between exclusive Cuban sailings, until that point will now feature an added call at Santiago de Cuba.
Beyond Fathom, many other cruise lines also received approval recently to sail to Cuba roundtrip, but the quantity of departures is considerably more limited than anticipated, with the exception of Pearl Seas Cruises.

Seeking approval for a long while since 2015, Pearl Seas will begin deploying its 210-guest Pearl Mist from Florida beginning this January 17, 2017. It too will sail regularly like Fathom but again only through May on 11 voyages as scheduled at this time. Making it more ideal than Fathom, however, will be its four Cuban stops at Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, as well as Trinidad, not visited by the Adonia.
Among more mainstream brands, the remaining approved companies will merely skirt the surface of Cuba by visiting only Havana on a handful of itineraries. Next up will be Oceania Cruises on March 7, 21 and 31, 2017 when the 1,252-guest Marina heads to the Caribbean on three consecutive voyages visiting the capital city for one or two days each.
Also on March 21, 2017 will be Azamara Club Cruises’ singular 13-night roundtrip from Miami on the 686-guest Azamara Quest, an existing voyage modified to now include an overnight stay in Havana.
Come April 11 and 18, 2017, Regent Seven Seas Cruises will send its 700-guest Seven Seas Mariner to overnight in Havana, departing twice from Miami on weeklong Caribbean outings.

Royal Caribbean International will shortly follow on April 19, 2017 by sailing its 1,840-guest Empress of the Seas to the Cuban port from Miami on April 19, 2017 and then again from Tampa on April 30 and May 20, 2017.
Rounding out the new approvals will be Norwegian Cruise Line when its 2,004-guest Norwegian Sky will first go to Havana from Miami on five 4-day cruises scheduled on May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2017.
Notably, no cruise line has approval to sail to Cuba roundtrip from the States beyond May 2017. There are, of course, several smaller operations that can take American guests legally to Cuban ports from within the Caribbean, but the ability to do so conveniently from a U.S. homeport beyond then, and potentially up until then, will likely be dependent on the political climate under the Trump administration following his inauguration on January 20, 2017.

The Fast Facts About Guatemala Travel

Guatemala ranks as one of my favorite places in the world. I planned on traveling Guate for three weeks and instead I stayed for three months. There was just something so calm and charming about the country. The culture is rich and accessible and the landscape is just gorgeous — perhaps that’s why I fangirl over it so hard. This is one of the best spots in Central America; the only other I would consider a contender is Nicaragua.
If you’re planning a backpacking trip through Central America, you’ll surely hear about the dangers. As a region, they are both founded and unfounded. There are legitimate issues around transportation, and Central America in general is a place where you just don’t want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But in Guatemala, the violence is not pervasive. Although I heard some stories, I never encountered violence in the two and half months I traveled the country.
What I found in Guatemala, was an incredibly warm people who are open and happy for the tourism coming to their country. The indigenous Mayan culture is alive and full, and Guatemala is home to the most beautiful natural and Mayan sites in the world. It’s worth planning several weeks in here if you’re backpacking the region, or know that you could easily fill a two-week vacation if you’re traveling just to Guate. This guide includes city recommendations for my favorite experiences in the country, as well as asocially responsible section with volunteer recommendations.

The availability of many diverse geographical scenes, places, things and celebrations in India have delighted the tourists for years such as monuments, museums, forts, sanctuaries, religious places, palaces, handicrafts, fairs, festivals, classical and folk dances, music, languages, Agra, Jaipur, Jhansi, Nalanda, Mysore, Hyderabad, Mahabaleshwar, Delhi, Aurangabad, Ujjain, Shirdi, Hardwar, Varanasi, Puri, Allahabad, Amritsar, Ajmer, Vaishno Devi, Badrinath, Rameshwaram, Kedarnath, Srinagar, Manali, Kullu, Dehradun, Darjeeling, Nainital, Ooty, Shimla, Kashmir etc.
Variety of interesting activities such as water sports, sailing, scuba diving, rafting, skiing, mountaineering, houseboats, winter sports, etc are promoting the tourism in India. In order to encourage people, a tourism campaign named as ‘Incredible India’ was started by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) in in 2005. Tourists places in India has also been divided under sections like spiritual tourism,’ ‘ecotourism’, ‘spa tourism’, and ‘adventure tourism’ in order to encourage tourism and better growth in India.
Pollution in India has hit the Indian tourism industry to a great extent for example, effluents from the Mathura Refinery is affecting the marbles of Taj Mahal in Agra because of the negligence of concerned authorities. Another example is, beautiful beaches in India is altering gradually into the dumping grounds of garbage and wastes left by the tourists. So, it needs to overcome the pollution issues in India as well as promote medical tourism in order to enhance tourism India. Medical tourism in the country provides great level relief, safety and security to the tourists which will regularly improve the tourism in the country. Many initiatives have been taken jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Tourism for maintaining the international standards in medical facilities to the tourists.

Travel and Tourism Speech 3

Travel and Tourism Speech 3

Good morning to everyone. My name is…, I study in class… standard. I would like to speech on the topic of travel and tourism in India. Tourism is very important source of the economy in the country. However it needs investment first in order to make the tourist destinations clean, more attractive, safe, and secure for the tourists safety purpose. If we analyze the level of tourism in the country the question arises that what we do to promote tourism in our country. Do we maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene in all the villages, towns and cities of the country. It needs proper cleanliness, safety and maintenance of the tourists destinations in the country in order to promote the tourism. Only being full of historical monuments, heritages, etc do not attract tourists. Tourists see cleanliness, safety and security of the tourists destinations of any country.
Our country is worldwide famous for having attractive tourist destinations. People from all over the world come every year in a huge crowd to see the various sight-seeings. There are many big cities in India having very attractive world-class skyscrapers. Our country is the home to beautiful Taj Mahal, excellent gateway to the Himalayas, Royal Bengal Tiger, Lotus Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, India Gate, Red Fort of Delhi, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar, Harmandir Sahib, Amer Fort, Akshardham, Hawa Mahal, City Palace Jaipur, Gateway of India, Mysore Palace, Meenakshi Amman Temple, Golkonda, Jama Masjid Delhi, Lodi Gardens, Siddhivinayak Temple Mumbai, Mahabodhi Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Charminar, Lake Palace, Jantar Mantar, City Palace Udaipur, Dal Lake, Falaknuma Palace, Venkateswara Temple Tirumala, and many more.
Other tourist destinations in India are Srinagar, Shimla, Goa, Coorg, Ooty, Darjeeling, Varanasi, Mahabaleshwar, Pune, Gangtok, Imphal, Kajiranga, Kashmir, Kanyakumari, Kerala, Ajanta Ellora, Leh/Ladakh, etc. However, there are lot to be done in order to improve the prospects of tourism in India to attract more tourists to give foreign tourists a memorable experience like never before anywhere else in the world.
People from upper class Indian society generally like to spend holidays in London, New York or other swish countries however people from middle class society always enjoy tourists destinations in their own country. Our country is highly targeted as the tourist place by the people all over the world in spite of many problems that’s why travel and tourism in India needs to be promoted more.
